After purchasing a Makerbot Replicator 2 as part of a grant received by the University at Buffalo Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a small group of students and myself came up with the idea of manufacturing our own filament.
After extensive research and much planning, we developed schematics for our filament extrusion device on both a mechanical and an electrical level. These schematics can be seen above and to the right, respectively.
At the moment, work on the electronics of the extruder are complete. Mechanically, we still need to add the extrusion die on the end, and add a form of kickback protection so as to ensure that the motor is not damaged during operation. After that, we will begin testing to find the optimal extrusion settings to begin creating our own filament.
